Some of the classes at Larsen had the priviledge to meet Tom Turkey and learn a little more about him when he visited our school.  Students learned a few interesting facts about turkeys:  Male turkeys "gobble" but female turkeys "bark".  When a male turkeys are calm their heads are blue but when they are mad they turn red.  Also, during the Revolutionary days, their long feathers were used to write with.  We hope we don't see Tom Turkey on our tables in a couple weeks!

Students poured (red) hot water and (blue) cold water in two sides of a density box. When the partition between the two of them was removed, the denser cold water moved to the bottom, while the less-dense hot water moved to the top.

The kindergarten students in Mrs. Hyer’s classes have been talking about what they are thankful for.  They colored turkeys (most of them called them chickens).  The students had to cut up the sentence “I am thankful for…” and put it back in order.  Then they had to sound out the word and try to write it. Some were thankful for their tramp, fish, cats, toy guys, and even their family! Each class got a picture by their (chickens) oops, Turkeys!

Riverview's Weekly Message-Make Your Mark!

Riverview Elementary News - Wed, 11/08/2017 - 6:32pm

Principal Moment

If I were in charge of the world, I would change the math terms addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  I have a good idea what their new names would be:

Addition would be Bouncy Fists.  “What’s 8 + 7?”  Kids like to hold up their fists then start opening it up one finger at a time.  Each time they stick out a finger they bounce their hand. “9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, FIFTEEN!”

Subtraction would be Sneaky Fingers.  Sometimes kids don’t want the teacher to see them counting on their fingers so they hide their hands under their desks just like they do when they sneak in a fistful of Doritos, or a bug, or a stick.

Multiplication would be called Wake Me Up When You Get There

Teacher: “What’s 7 x 8?”

Student: “51?”

Teacher:  “No, but you’re close.”

Student: “52?”

Teacher:  “You’re getting warmer.”

Student:  “53?”

Teacher:  “You’re super hot.”

Student:  “55?”

Teacher:   “YOU’RE BURNING UP!”

Student:  “56?”

Teacher:  “YEAHHHHH!”

Division would Tearing My Hair Out.  (I can think of other names as well, but this is the only one I can put in print.)  When a teacher needs to be out for the day, we choose from a menu of items on an automated system.  We select the title that corresponds to the reason for our absence: illness, personal leave, district assignment.  There should be one for long division.

PTA

A big thank you to the PTA for an outstanding book fair!  On behalf of Riverview students and teachers, I thank you for the time spent in creating a fun event for all!

Penny Wars

Riverview is hosting a Penny Wars fund raiser through the month on November until Thanksgiving Break.  Each class earns points by collecting pennies.  Points are subtracted from a class when students “bomb” a class with silver coins or bills.  The grade level with the most points at the end of the war wins a reward.  All the money raised will be put into a scholarship fund for a former Riverview student who will be graduating from Spanish Fork High School this year.  Current Riverview students are paying it forward and helping a Riverview graduate ‘Make a Mark’ in the world!

Food Drive-Cans for Kids

We’re thankful for canned foods.  They have certainly kept many bellies fed.  This food drive is titled “Cans for Kids.”  We are collecting cans with foods that are okay to eat from a can; foods that a child could prepare on his/her own if there were ever the need i.e.: Canned chicken breast, pork-n-beans, soups, Chef Boyardee canned foods, fruits, Vienna sausage, etc.  Thank you!

Veteran’s Pictures

If you have a family member who has served in the military, please be willing to share with us a copy of his/her photo.  Mrs. RaeAnn Nelson will be posting the pictures in the hall in honor of all those who are serving our country.

Website-Updated

The Riverview website http://riverview.nebo.edu/. has been updated in order to hopefully make it easier to access school information.  Please check out the new format.

Recess Guidance

Cool weather is upon us.  As you know, poor air quality is common during Utah winters and affects health.  Riverview monitors air quality from: http://air.utah.gov/.  We follow the Utah recess guide:  http://health.utah.gov/asthma/pdfs/airquality/recessguidance.pdf

During the cold months we will check air quality levels in the morning.  Students will remain inside when air quality reaches high levels on the air quality index.  If the air quality is good ALL students will be sent outside for recess.  Please make sure your child is coming to school with outdoor clothing during the cold weather months.
