Mrs. Openshaw was selected by her colleagues to receive the Crystal Apple Award.  The award was presented during faculty meeting by Craig Havey.  Her colleagues said the following:

She has a positive attitude with her students and her colleagues. She works hard to make her classroom a wonderful place of learning. She expects a lot from her students and pushes them to go farther than they believed they could go. She goes the extra mile as a teacher. She has innovative ideas and tries to find more and more ways to help her students learn. It is a pleasure working with her.

She often takes extra jobs or volunteers for a committee to help improve our school.  She works tirelessly to help her students succeed both as students and as individuals trying to find their way. She thinks outside the box and finds ways to make learning fun and engaging for everyone. Her students feel safe, respected, and excited to be in her classroom every day.

She brought the arts into her class by doing the opera last year and this year. She has positive communication with the students and parents. She is great at helping fellow teachers and staff.

Recently Brockbank Elementary fifth-graders held their wax museum. The students picked a famous person in American history, they did research on that person, memorizing interesting and important facts, and then they got to dress-up like that person for a day. During the day, students from other grades were able to visit the museum and learn about these famous Americans. That night there was a program so that parents and grandparents could come and see what the students had learned. It was a very fun and educational experience for all that participated.

Nebo Education Foundation Grant Awarded to Mrs. Dimmick

Spanish Oaks Elementary News - Thu, 11/30/2017 - 7:46pm

Spanish Oaks Elementary - Heidi Dimmick

“I would like to thank the Nebo Foundation for the grant for books to add to our guided reading library in the M-P levels, as well as higher level books that are appropriate for third-grade students.  Third-grade is a pivotal year where students go from learning to read to reading to learn.  It is so important to help them find books that they love.  When students are exposed to books that are in a series that they like, then they are more likely to continue reading the series.  This helps students to love reading.  Thank you for making this possible!” exclaimed Heidi Dimmick, third-grade teacher at Spanish Oaks Elementary.

Nebo Education Foundation board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues, and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students.  The Nebo Education Foundation functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses.

Foundation past president, Kristina Christensen, said, "It is a pleasure to receive the grant applications and see how remarkable and creative the Nebo District teachers are.  The Nebo Education Foundation facilitates these grant monies to help teachers realize their ideas and the students' potential.  Our foundation board gets to see a glimpse at how well our teachers are instructing our students."

We were so happy to have the Discovery Gateway Children's Museum come today to teach our fifth graders about chemical and physical changes. The program is called Reaction Time and is funded by our very own Utah State Legislature. Students were able to watch a fun presentation where the presenter lit different colors of fire! Changed liquids into different colors. Showed us what indigestion looks like! And talked about solids, liquids and gases. After the presentation each class was able to go to a lab where they had a hands on experience with chemical and physical changes! We are so happy to have had this awesome program at our school!
